Daydreams: Meet creative darling, Candice Heart
We’re chatting with Candice Heart, Sydney based illustrator and all ’round creative darling…she’s on our one to watch list, so pour yourself an herbal tea and settle in as we get to know what gets her creative spirit excited!1. What’s your star sign?Earth sign, Virgo.2. How did you get started in your art?It has always been a strong interest of mine and I feel like I had a lot of influence from my dad as he is a painter. So naturally in the later years of high school it was my elective. I was lucky enough that my homeroom was the art classroom, so I spent most of my time there. When I left school I had no idea that I could pursue art as a self sustaining career, so it was a good 3 years of just living life and figuring out what was up before I did an Advanced Diploma for Fine Arts at TAFE. That was full time for 3 years of drawing, painting, print making, photography and sculpture. It was amazing and really helped me to develop and learn new ways of creating.3. Have you always been creative?Yes, always. When I was a kid I would make collages with my mum, cutting up photos and old birthday/christmas cards. And I was forever drawing, mostly mermaids and weird letters. From what my mum has told me I was also obsessed with the colour red for a time and went through a phase of meticulously colouring everything red, all inside the lines (thats the perfectionist double Virgo working its magic there – its my star and rising sign)
4. What are some of your inspirations?
Colour, movement, nature, animals, a conversation.
5. Do you look to other artists for motivation and inspiration? Who are some of them?
I love going to visit Brett Whitely’s Studio in Surry Hills. It is an instant calm for me and I always leave feeling motivated and inspired. His work is so expressive and I love how he infuses line, thick paint and collage.
6. What mediums do you use the most?
Pencil, markers, watercolour and paper.
7. What are some other ways you express yourself?
Movement through yoga, journaling. Another thing which I would like to return to is music. I did vocal training for 4 years. In the past I have found this as a very powerful release.
8. Do you ever experience creative blocks? How do you overcome them?
Sure do! I overcome them by energetically cleansing my space and my energy.
For my space: I light my favourite candle (lavender, sage and cucumber) and a stick of nag champ incense. And I make sure to cleanse and boost all the crystals I have around with sound vibrations from my tingsha cymbals.
For my energy: I combine a 30min chakra cleanse meditation (by Belinda Davidson) and place crystals from my chakra healing kit on my chakra points. This helps me to get clear on where the energy is getting blocked and I can work through it.
9. What is your favourite travel destination?
Barcelona is up there as one of my favourites.
