: Store Sessions Newtown

Newtown is the heart of Sydney’s indie culture, the kind of place that you can sit and people watch and see all walks of life, in all sorts of styles to inspire you. It’s also a great place to wander with lots of little stores filled with treasures and delicious cafes in the day and tiny bars tucked up and down King St. We spent a day with Cathie Taylor from our Newtown store and got the lay of the land…

When styling in your Tree of Life store, what are your go-to styling tips?

1. Add texture to any outfit – I like to layer things up a bit by mixing prints in similar tones & getting creative using dusters and kimonos. These work great for layering and gives that extra bit of edge to an outfit. I also love anything with buttons all the way down as they also work perfect as a cape or duster as well.

2. Not feeling like a million layers? Then a big handblock cotton sarong wrapped around as a head wrap with a big knot on top adds that cool gypsy look to any basic outfit. I usually wear mine when wearing tight jeans a fun top, a vintage belt and doc martens boots.

3. To really tie my whole look together for me it’s about the make up and accessories. Especially if I feel I am having a flat day or I have worn my favourite clothing pieces to death! I bring it back to life by adding a bit of GLITTER eyeliner and a dash of sparkle under my eye with some layered necklaces, red lippy or some bindis.

Tell us a little about Newtown…

Newtown is a hot spot for many great places to dine, cocktail bars to wind down after work or after shopping! and parks to relax and walk your dogs. The list is quite endless!
As a local of about 12 years heres a few of my personal favs…

Lentil as anything – located on South King St, lentils is a popular & welcoming communal space, promoting multiculturalism and volunteer work. They serve hot nutritious vegan meals, a glass of chai and a yummy desert you can zone out with live music on Fridays & Saturdays & they also run yoga, meditation and other workshops.

Gelato Blue -located on the corner next door to tree of life, is famous for it’s yummy all vegan ice creams and treats. This is a must try for anyone wanting a naughty snack or desert while out wandering King Street.

Newtown Markets – located just opposite our store, on every Saturday, the Newtown markets are another great community space where you can buy (or sell your own!) clothing, trinkets and other unique items. The local market stalls are full of life and character, definitely check it out and take in the good vibes right in the heart of Newtown.

Local Parks – grab some takeaway lunch and head to one of our two fantastic parks, located at each end of Newtown. The Brick Works or Sydney Park is down the St Peters end of South King St and is awesome for dog walking, coffee and bike riding and picnics. Camperdown Park is located at the centre of Newtown, where you can find one of the oldest trees in the Inner West – the Morton Bay fig in Stephens Church Cemetery. Relax on the grass in the sunshine and take in the eye-catching street art around the back streets of Camperdown and Newtown.

Mary’s Burgers – located on Mary Street, Mary’s Burgers is a little rustic bar with a rock n roll and alternative vibe serving craft beer and delicious burgers! Great service and atmosphere this is one of my favourite burger places in Newtown! If you feel like eating outdoors in the park, grab a takeaway and off you go!
