Where did the name Iluka come from? What does it mean, to you?
The name came from a story I was told, a character to whom I felt drawn. Meaning ‘by the sea’ I guess it’s a name that will outlive me, just as I hope my music will.
What is the first creative memory you have (or, the first time you recall being truly inspired)?
I think I’ve always created and existed, often in my own little dream world. I guess a memory that stands out though is the first time I recorded my own song. I would have been 7 years old and with my Dad using his 12 track recording desk. I just remember being so bewildered and in this state of awe at the process of adding layers of tracks to an already existing song! I was so proud when we finally finished the song and played it to Mum. I felt this electric sensation that I still get now once I have just written a song. This feeling of wonder… like ‘I gave birth to that… this is my creation’.
You have previously said that you “crave intensity and “wonder”, where do you find such inspiration?
Everywhere. On the road, in conversations with strangers, book stores, cheap hotels, rain on the roof, city streets, coffee shops, music of course, wildflowers, full moons, day dreams, the twilight hour, the ocean at night, poetry. Where don’t I?
How does fashion play a part in becoming Iluka? What are your style staples?
I don’t know if there is a ‘becoming Iluka’ type thing. My style reflects the mood of my soul. Some days I feel outrageous and rebellious and eccentric so I go for bold patterns and colours. Statement pieces. The wilder and more psychedelic the better. Then other days I feel softer, mysterious, darker… these days consist of velvets and lace and flowing dresses. Then I suppose you could say there’s the every other day me, which consists of a 70s tee and my favourite blue jean bells.
inally, tell us about Blue My Soul and its influences. What are you hoping people will hear in the EP?
For me this EP is totally influenced of course by what I listen to… a lot of soul and gospel music, rock n’ roll, 60s doo wop and a little bit of folky twang. It was recorded mostly to tape to really capture the warmth and rawness that I love so much about old records.
The influences also lie in my experiences over the last few years… the whole EP really reads as quite a personal story following my travels all over the world in this kind of pursuit of beauty and truth. Searching for something, something I don’t think I’ve yet found or come to fully understand. But I guess that is just the drug of youth?
