Handmade: DIY Beeswax Food Wrap
We have been on the lookout for ways that we can reduce waste footprint and these beeswax foodwraps are not only reusable but also can be made from recycled 100% cotton clothing!
Beeswax food wraps reduce your non-biodegradable waste production and plastic use, and also allows you to stop consuming chemicals released by the cling wrap that we are currently using. This is an eco-friendly, reusable alternative to plastic wrap that you can use to wrap lunch or cover bowls of left overs.
Beeswax food wraps are great as they allow the food breathe but slow the rate of decomposition. Beeswax has been used for centuries to seal preserved foods, as it is one of Mother Nature’s natural preservatives with anti fungal, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties.
You will need…
Jojoba Oil (or coconut oil as a replacement!)
Powdered Pine Rosin
100% cotton fabric, the thinner the better!
Spoon or Paintbrush for spreading
Oven set to 110°
How to Make it:
1. Start by measuring up the fabric. We created a 2 different square sizes – 20cm by 20cm and 30cm by 30cm.
2. Line your baking trays with baking paper and then grate the beeswax to sprinkle on the fabric. You will need about 1 teaspoon the 20cm square, 1.5 – 2 teaspoons for the 30cm.
The aim is to have even coverage of beeswax over the fabric. If your fabric is thicker, use the full amount.
3. Once you have covered your fabric pieces with beeswax, you can now add the powdered pine resin. This is what gives the wrap it’s ability to cling.
You’ll need 2 teaspoons for the 20cm square and 1 tablespoon & 1 teaspoon for 30cm square. Sprinkle an even amount over the beeswax layer.
Drizzle 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil on the 20cm square and 1 teaspoon of jojoba on the 30cm square.
4. Place your squares in the oven. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Once the ingredients have started to melt and combine, you can open the door, slide the tray out half way and spread the mix evenly across the fabric. We suggest you use a paint brush that you don’t mind destroying or the back of a spoon if you get stuck! We left it in the oven for another minute or two before removing the oven trays.
5. Once the mixture is evenly melted and spread, you can remove the fabric from the oven and let it cool. The weather was against us the day this blog post was put together, so we simply allowed them too cool on the cold bench. Alternatively, you can peg them up on the line to air dry. It will be a little tacky at first but allow it cool and it will be more manageable.
6. Wrap your food! Only use half an avocado for your brekkie? That’s ok, we can wrap the rest of it up in our new beeswax wrap! Allow the warmth of your hands to help mould and shape the wrap. Pinch the corners to help secure the wrap around your food.
7. They are very easy to care for, simply wash them in cool water with mild dish soap and allow to air dry and store in a cool dry spot.
